The Eastern Sierra

The Eastern Sierra, also called the High Sierra, is the premier mountain range in the west. This page features classic peaks between Lone Pine and Bishop, California. There are several 14,000 foot peaks in this area.

Campgrounds

Lone Pine: $17 per night, vault toilets and water. 40% walk in. Location: 7 miles west of Lone Pine on Whitney Portal Road. 6 miles to the trailhead.
Elevation: 6,200 feet Open: April through October

Whitney Portal: $19 per night, vault toilets and water. Location: 13 miles west on Lone Pine on Whitney Portal Rd. Near the trailhead. Elevation: 8,300 feet Open: Late May to early October

Horseshoe Meadow: $12 per night, walk in only, vault toilets and water. Location: 3 miles on Whitney Portal Road, left on Horse Meadows for 21 miles to the end of the road. It's about 31 miles to Mt. Whitney trailhead. Elevation: 10,000 feet Open: June through Sept.

Big Pine: $20 per night; reservations need; vault toilets and water
Location: 10.7 miles west of Big Pine; Elevation: 7,800 feet
Open: May through October

Upper Sage Flat: $20 per night; reservation needed; vault toilets and water
Location: 9.8 miles west of Big Pine; Elevation: 7,500 feet

Permits

Permits are required for most backpacking/camping trips to most areas.(This info. does not pertain to Mt. Whitney or the Mt. Whitney area)

As a rule 60% of permits are by reservation; 40 % by walk-in.
Reservation permits cost $5 per person total, not per night.
Walk-in permits are free, but you might not get one for the area you want.

You will be mailed a confirmation letter. This is NOT a permit.

Take the letter into a ranger station to pick up your permit day of or day before your trip.


You must pick up your permit by 10 a.m. the day of your trip
or call the ranger station for a late pick up.


How to pick up permit when Ranger Station is closed:

Call Wilderness Permit Office (760) - 873- 2483 one to two days before your
date of entry and request a night box pick up of your permit. Have your reservation #,
which is on your confirmation letter and was given to you when you called for a permit.

Note: If camping in Sequoia or Kings Canyon the night box pick up is NOT allowed.
